Greater Miami, the crossroads of the Americas, is known for its beaches (84 miles of coastline), its economic growth, its cosmopolitan ambiance, and growing cultural, educational, economic and political links to Latin America. Greater Miami encompasses more than 2000 square miles and has a population of 2.06 million of whom 50% identify themselves are Hispanics. With 44% of its residents between the ages of 25 and 44, Greater Miami is one of the most youthful and vibrant metropolitan areas of the United States. Because of its strategic location and its many assets, Greater Miami offers ample employment in different areas. Its thriving economic development continues to take a global focus with international commerce challenging to become the region's top industry.

Miami and the South Florida region are intimately linked to Latin America in
significant ways. Commonly referred to as the "Gateway to Latin America."
Miami benefits culturally, socially and economically from this unique
relationship.
For example:

Almost 80% of Florida's international trade in 1998 involved Latin America.

Miami has more direct daily flights to and from Latin America and the Caribbean than any other city in the Americas.

Consequently, Florida International University, the largest public university in South Florida, has made a consistent commitment to foster its relationship with Latin America. FIU has continually expanded programs within the region, and FIU will continue to enhance these valued programs in the coming years. Not surprisingly, close to 60% of FIU's students are from Latin America and the Caribbean.
